Middle schools students walking through new open gate system

Brevard Public Schools is expanding OpenGate® weapons detection systems to middle schools across the district, adding another layer of security for students and staff.

The expansion builds on the successful implementation of OpenGate® systems at all 16 BPS high schools, completed during the 2025-26 school year. As part of the district's five-year Strategic Plan and ongoing investment in security infrastructure, Central Middle School is the first of 12 middle schools scheduled to receive the technology, with installations continuing districtwide through February 2027.

Funding for the middle school expansion comes from surtax dollars, supporting continued investments in safety and security throughout the district.

OpenGate® systems provide a quick, non-intrusive way to screen individuals for dangerous or prohibited items as they enter school buildings. The technology is designed to keep students moving efficiently through entrances while minimizing disruptions to the school day.

If the system generates an alert, the individual will be asked to pass through again. If the alert continues, the individual will be directed to a secondary screening area where personal items may be inspected.

As OpenGate® is introduced at each middle school, BPS will communicate directly with families, so students and parents know what to expect.

The ongoing rollout is part of BPS’ commitment to maintaining safe, welcoming learning environments while continuing to strengthen security measures across the district.
