Reporting Bullying and Harassment (Title IX)

Anti-Bullying/Kindness Contract/Guidelines

Bullying is defined in our BPS Elementary Handbook as systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on another.  The qualifying criteria are: it is repeated behavior, there is an intent to do harm, and there is an imbalance of power between those involved.

Physical bullying can be hitting, kicking, pushing someone, or even just threatening to do it.  It can also be stealing, hiding or destroying someone’s things and threatening someone to do something they don’t want to do. Verbal bullying can be name-calling, harassing, teasing, and insulting someone.  Relationship bullying can be excluding someone, refusing to talk to someone, spreading rumors or lies about someone, humiliating someone, or pressuring them to do something they don’t want to do.  This includes behavior on social media/cyberbullying that impacts the school environment, climate, or student safety.

What do all of these things have in common? They are all examples of ways one person can make another person feel hurt, afraid, uncomfortable, or controlled. This behavior violates the Student Responsibility and Rights in the BPS Elementary Handbook and violates our Dolphin Rules of keeping my hands and feet to myself, making safe choices, and treating others as you wish to be treated.

At school, students are part of a school family and a classroom family. That family depends on civility and each person treating the other with kindness, respect, and dignity. Students are expected to follow our school and classroom rules and abide by the following Anti-Bulling/Kindness Guidelines:

 1.  Verbal or physical harassment, mean spirited behavior, or bullying will not be tolerated.

2.  Encouraging others to verbally or physically harass or bully others will not be tolerated.

3.  Students are responsible to report all incidents of verbal or physical harassment or bullying to teachers/staff.  Teachers/staff will respond and take action on reported incidents and inform the student when action has been taken.

4.  Students will participate in Ocean Breeze’s Bullying Awareness and Social Emotional Learning educational programs and can be assigned to follow-up programs as behaviors indicate.

5.  Ocean Breeze is a kind community and all individuals will follow the anti-bullying/ kindness guidelines (students, staff, parents, visitors, etc…).

Parents, students, and teachers must report suspected incidences of bullying/harassment to school personnel/administration immediately. School Administration will investigate all accusations of bullying/harassment within 15 school days from the date they receive the report. Click the link below for the appropriate Bullying/Harassment Reporting Form.
