Overview

South Lake Elementary grades K-6

South Lake will focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) implementing an integrated curriculum. Our content will continue to be standards-based and will use the lens of both STEM and Arts Integration to enhance and deepen the meaning of content for students, to provide an access point for learners of varying abilities, and as a way to engage both teachers and students. By making purposeful connections in and through STEM and the Arts, all skills, processes, and subjects are strengthened and students gain a richer learning experience.

Students will be enriched in a Makerspace Lab and SmartLab. Both of these opportunities will provide students with hands-on learning experiences.

Makerspace Lab – The Makerspace Lab will include, but is not limited to, woodworking, electronics, robotics, digital fabrication, kinetic machines, sewing, and much more. Students will be able to create products versus the sense of “entitlement” of buying everything. They will have to be “Design Thinkers” which is a way of looking at problems, needs, and solutions and putting people and values first. We want our students to be 21st century critical thinkers and observe, ask questions, understand the “why” behind what they are doing and put that into action. South Lake students will learn the value of collaboration and teamwork, creativity and imagination, critical thinking, and problem solving. It is truly an environment where one is only limited by one’s imagination. It mixes all aspects of STEAM–Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics–and sprinkles it with imagination for an exploration of “what if.”

SmartLab – What would it look like in a SmartLab?

The mission is simple: Engage every learner, every day!

Creative Learning Systems has pioneered STEM and digital media arts program in K-12 education. We will address the needs of a wide range of abilities, learning styles, and personal interests. We will build connections to the fine arts, language arts, and social studies. College and career readiness demands next generation skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and communication, project and time management, creativity and adaptability. These skills must be an integral part of the educational experience. Here are just a few examples of the types of projects your child will be working on in this lab: science exploration, digital imaging, comic creation, simple machines, instrument prototypes, software engineering, electronics, 3-D printing, Ozobot Robotics, Lego Renewable Energy, and much more!

"Innovation Center" Lab – Stay tuned for the exciting things that will be put into our "Innovation Center" Lab. This is in the “works” and is being developed with the help of our Brevard technology integrators.

Character traits that we will focus on:

S - Self-discipline

T - Trustworthiness

E - Excellence

A - Ambition
