Atlantis Elementary School, named for the space shuttle Atlantis, has served the Port St. John community for the past since 1989. Situated on 15 acres in the Port St. John community of Cocoa, Florida, in Brevard County, Atlantis Elementary is located in the heart of the community and was a Nationally Recognized School of Character and is a Model School for Professional Learning Communities at Work and a Positive Behavior Support and Intervention Model School. Atlantis is proud of being: one of twelve schools nationwide which was featured in Samuel Casey Carter’s book, “On Purpose: How Great School Cultures Form Strong Character.” Atlantis Elementary currently serves over 700 PreK-6th grade students. Atlantis’ facility is open air, with six brick buildings situated around an open courtyard. Atlantis Elementary School first opened in portables on the campus of Challenger 7 Elementary School in 1989, moving to its current facility in 1990.
Currently, Atlantis Elementary School has been recognized by the state of Florida as having a school grade of “A”.
One hundred percent of the core classes at Atlantis Elementary are taught by in-field, highly qualified teachers. Within the past few years, several of Atlantis staff members have received recognitions which have included Brevard County Employee of the Year, Brevard County Teacher of the Year, Brevard County PRISM Outstanding Math Teacher, BPS’ Exemplary Mathematics Teacher, Space Coast Science Education Alliance Exemplary Science Teacher, one of the 30 Most Innovative Teachers nationwide under the age of 30, awarded Bright Ideas Mini-Grants, and recognitions for maintaining a clean campus, a quality food services program, and the EPA’s Energy Star award. Atlantis has also been designated as a Gold Level Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Model School!
Atlantis Elementary School is a center for Deaf/Hearing Impaired Education, as well as Gifted Education. Brevard After School is available on campus before and after school. The Brevard After School program provides a safe and healthy place beyond the school day for children of families in the community needing the support. The support is provided by a successful, high-quality environment supervised by a caring highly-qualified staff. The primary goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for children with working parents or parents attending school.
Parent and community involvement at Atlantis Elementary School is the backbone of Atlantis’ continued exemplary performance. Atlantis has active parent volunteers. In fact, Atlantis volunteers logged over 17,000 hours this past year. Atlantis is most thankful for the many business partners who consistently assist Atlantis: Community Credit Union, Domino’s Pizza of Port St. John, Beef O’Brady’s, Kona Ice, VA Paving, Coastal Community Church, St. Patrick’s Church, Valic, Horace Mann, and Space Coast Junior/Senior High School. Atlantis Elementary will continue to place safety as its number one goal and strive for the highest of academic standards, while consistently establishing character as its foundation.
