Welcome to the Media Center
The mission of the Coquina Elementary Library is to provide students with the opportunity to become lifelong seekers of knowledge and information. Students will use the library as a place to become curators of information, acquire digital and literacy skills, and develop the 4 C's of education, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.
We are proponents for our students and programs.

Coquina Elementary School
Reading is one of the most important skills your child will learn in school. Like all skills, improvement comes with practice, and the Coquina Elementary Library provides a wide variety of books for students to borrow for reading practice, information, and enjoyment.
Your child’s class will visit the school library every few weeks. You can help your child by reading to or with him/her and asking questions about the story. Encourage your child to spend time reading with you, other adults, and siblings daily. Regardless of a child’s age, reading together is always a benefit.
Students may check out up to two (2) books!
The expectation is that students read the books they check out. They do not have to return them all at once, they can return them as they complete each book. They should finish reading each book before returning it to the library.
Books are due back within three weeks from the check out date. Students may renew them one time, if desired, and there is not a wait list for the book.
If you have an overdue book, you may not check out another until it is returned. Students/families will be asked to pay for lost or damaged books, or replace the book with the same title and year.
Students will be able to view books through Follett Destiny. They will select their book choices and place a hold on books.

This is our online data base where students may check to see if we have a book in our school collection.
Students use their student number to login.
Parents can also look up a student's account to see what they have checked out and when books are due.

Collection
The library media program provides appropriate, accurate and current resources in all formats to meet the needs of the learning community. In an outstanding library media program, there is extensive evidence of current resources (print, non-print, & electronic) that are very responsive to curricular and recreational needs. These resources also reflect the school’s cultural diversity.
Objectives of the Selection Process
The responsibility for the selection of instructional materials rests with the certified school library media specialist. The selection of media is a continuous and cooperative process involving administrators, staff, students and parents. The primary objective of instructional materials and equipment shall be to enrich, support, and implement the educational program of the school. As the center of the educational program, the LMC provides materials and services that meet academic, technical, personal, and social needs of the school community.
To this end, the School Board of Brevard County subscribes to the principles laid down in the Library Bill of Rights and affirms that it is the responsibility of the school library media center to support these principles.
The objectives for selection are:
To make available a wide range of materials on varying levels of difficulty with a diversity of appeal compatible with the different needs, interests, and viewpoints of students and teachers.
To provide materials which strengthen and enrich the school’s instructional program.
To provide materials that will stimulate growth in literary appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards.
To provide materials representative of the many religious, ethnic, cultural, and language groups, and of their contribution to the heritage and culture of America and the world.
To place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials appropriate for the users of the school library media center.
NOTE: The district does not maintain a list of approved books or videos. Rather, the objectives and criteria for selection should guide the certified library media specialist in collection development.
Criteria for Selection
Materials considered for purchase are selected based on the following criteria:
Favorable review in a reputable, unbiased, professionally prepared selection aid.
Overall purpose and need in relation to the curriculum.
Educational significance.
Quality of writing and production.
Readability and user appeal.
Reputation of the publisher/producer, author/artist, etc.
Valid, accurate, objective, up-to-date, and appropriate information.
Areas that Require Special Consideration
Religion – factual media which represents all major religions.
Ideologies – factual information or philosophy which exerts a strong force in society.
Sex Education – factual information appropriate for the age group or related to the school curriculum. (Reference Florida School Code 1006.34(2)(b) Standards for Selection)
Science – factual information about medical and scientific knowledge.
Profanity – use of profanity does not automatically disqualify a selection. Efforts are made to exclude media using profanity in a lewd or detrimental manner.
Sex – pornographic, sensational, or titillating material is not included, but the evidence of sexual incidents appearing in the media does not automatically disqualify its use.

Efforts should be made to keep the media current, comprehensive, and include media that reflects rapidly developing instructional technologies.

The Library Mission statement:
The mission of the library media center is to create information-literate citizens who effectively access, evaluate, and use resources to encourage and prepare students to be life-long learners.
The library provides materials and services that meet the academic, technical, personal, and social needs of the school community. Materials for the school libraries are selected by professionals who are trained to develop collections for their school based on the needs of their population and curriculum, independently of their personal opinions or beliefs.
The media selection policy includes a wide range of materials with a varied range of reading and interest levels. Book selection is based on but not limited to student interest, instruction, cultural representation, socioeconomics and various points of view. Because libraries are forums for information and ideas, books are provided for the interest and enlightenment of all students and teachers.
As with all other aspects of a student’s education, parents are encouraged to be involved in a student’s book selection. The books in the media center, whether part of a specific reading program or not, are available for the review of all patrons.
