Students are selected for Membership in our school’s chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) based on grades earned as well as the Satisfactory/Outstanding received on Lifelong Learning Skills, and attendance.  Candidates have met or exceeded the criteria for membership base on 2018-2019 Report Cards were invited to attend.

During the year, we focus on 4 areas:  Scholarship, Responsibility, Scholarship, and Leadership.

Membership elects officers for President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

Members are asked to join a committee selected from the following:

  • Talent Show – this committee puts on a talent show in spring, auditions acts, and runs the show! Proceeds are donated to a charity of the membership choice.

  • Penny Wars – this committee organizes, advertises, and puts on a week of Penny Wars for our school. Proceeds will benefit the Science Lab.

  • PAWS Pals – this committee mentors another student at Longleaf with reading, math etc. They meet with their mentee weekly.

  • Community Outreach – this committee organizes donations such as food drives, helping victims of hurricanes, etc.

  • Science Lab Liasons – This committee keeps our science lab supplied, sets up for teachers, cleans up, and puts supplies away. They are assigned to one morning a week.

Our 4 Pilars:

Scholarship

Students who maintain straight A’s, A/B Honor Roll (in all subject areas) and all Satisfactory (S) and/or Outstanding (O)  on every quarterly report card. Also, members who have maintained less than 9 absences and 3 tardies during each marking period (9 weeks).

Responsibility

Students demonstrate positive qualities: high standards of honesty and reliability, cooperative and supportive disposition, courtesy and respect for others.  Thus, responsibility is consistently demonstrated in school, at home, and in the community.  These skills are reflected on a student's report  card under Lifelong Learning Skills, but are not limited to, report cards.  Members are given one week to give a copy of their report card to a Longleaf NEHS Advisor every 9 weeks.  Members must attend all meetings and activities unless previously discussed with an advisor. All meetings dates are scheduled and attached.

Service:

Students who choose activities on behalf of others (not including immediate family members) for no compensation (monetary or other) has been given. Service also includes students helping the teacher or peers in their classrooms, during activity, and at lunch.

Leadership:

Students are viewed as resourceful, good problem solvers, involved in and promoters of school activities, idea contributors, dependable, and are organized and organizers.  Leaders show exemplary behavior and conduct at all times.  Students actively participate in all NEHS meetings and activities.
