South Lake students with tress

Mangroves provide natural infrastructure to help protect nearby populated areas by reducing erosion and absorbing storm surge impacts during extreme weather events such as hurricanes. They are also important to the ecosystem too and their dense roots help bind and build soils. Fourth grade students were able to send 69 healthy plants back to the UCF Ceelab (Coastal and Estuarine Ecology Lab) for a repotting before planting along the shoreline at Canaveral National Seashore. Thank you to 4th grade teachers, South Lake students, UCF students, and Dr. Linda Walters for allowing our school to be part of this program!
