Students in foster care follow the same school enrollment procedures as all other Brevard Public Schools’ students. Under the McKinney-Vento Act and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), an exemption for the immediate required enrollment documentation (i.e., immunization history, birth certificate, school records) is granted for students in foster care and students who are placed in emergency or transitional shelters awaiting foster home or other permanent placement.

No student in a shelter or foster care should be denied enrollment to school due to missing registration documents.

Foster parents play an integral role in ensuring student success and are encouraged to participate in conferences with teachers, provide input and receive information regarding the student’s academic and emotional progress.

The Fact Sheet below, developed by the Florida Department of Education Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services, is designed to provide caregivers with information necessary to support the educational process for students in foster care in Florida. FACT SHEET
