Mental Wellness Programs and Services

What is Mental Health?

Mental health and well-being include our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make everyday choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. The Florida Department of Education has provided resources for mental health needs.

How are Students Identified for Help?

Brevard County Schools provides multiple pathways for students to be identified for help and services, these include immediate crisis, referral to community agency partner, or the school’s problem-solving team.

Who Can Make a Referral for Mental Health Supports and Services?

Parents, teachers, administrators, peers, and students themselves can make a request or referral.

How is a Referral Made?

Each school has an assigned School Counselor or Social Worker in charge of receiving referrals. Contact your school for this information on who to contact for referrals.

What happens after a Referral is Made?

The School Counselor or Social Worker in charge of receiving referrals will contact the person making the referral to gain more information to generate a formal referral (if appropriate). Any services (individual or small group) require parent permission, so the School Counselor or Social Worker will contact the parent/guardian to obtain parent permission before providing any services. If the parent/guardian refuse to provide permission for services, the formal referral and refusal will be documented appropriately.
