About NEHS

Membership in the National Elementary Honor Society is one of the most prestigious honors an elementary student can earn.  This program promotes excellence in academic achievement, involvement in leadership and service, and demonstration of good character.  The four pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character are the foundation upon which everything we do is built.  Holland Elementary is proud to have an established, active chapter of the NEHS, with membership being open to our sixth grade students.  Our goal is to complete at least three service projects per year that will better our school and our community.  Our mission is to leave the world a better place than when we found it.

Membership

Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon 6th grade students by a majority vote of the Faculty Council, and shall be based on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.  Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be enrolled in grade 6.

Eligible candidates must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (this may not include any Cs) for the previous and current academic years.  A 3.5 is equivalent to at least two As and two Bs.

Because the Faculty Council looks at the whole child rather than just grades, upon meeting the academic criteria, candidates shall be considered based on their demonstrated personal responsibility (service, leadership, and character).  The application includes opportunities for students to share how they have excelled in these areas.  To be considered for membership, two teacher recommendations must also be submitted.  These can be from current or former teachers.

The selection of active members shall be held once per year during the first semester of the school year.  Candidates will be notified of the decision reached by the Faculty Council, and those who are selected will become members when inducted at a special ceremony.  Once selected and inducted, all members are expected to maintain the standards by which they were selected and maintain all obligations of membership.

Obligations

Meetings of this chapter shall be held monthly.  All chapter members are expected to attend all regularly scheduled meetings.

The chapter shall determine 3-4 service projects for each year.  All members shall regularly participate in these projects.

Each member is expected to maintain the high standards by which they were selected.  Failure to do so could result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
