Overview

Our goal at WMSS is to provide a challenging curriculum in a caring and nurturing environment that promotes student learning and good citizenship. The policies and procedures for admission in WMSS reflect this basic choice.
As we continue to build upon our successes we are proud to provide an educational environment where parents, children, and educators work closely as a team. The differentiated instruction includes a wide range of science curriculum as well as all the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards. Students and parents are expected to sign and honor our "Parent, Student, Teacher Contract".

When selecting a school of choice, parents are an essential part of the learning team, and their acceptance of an active role in their child's learning environment is expected. Support by parents and students of West Melbourne Elementary School for Science (WMSS) mission statements, beliefs, objectives, policies and procedures are essential. Therefore, enrollment in WMSS is based on student and parent choice.

In 2006, Mrs. Benson's family relocated to Union County, NC to be closer to family and for career opportunities.  Mrs. Benson became the Assistant Principal for 3 years at the HS and Elementary levels.  Then, from 2009-2018, Mrs. Benson was the Principal at two NC Title 1 Schools.

In 2018, the Benson family returned to Florida and now resides in Brevard County.  Mrs. Benson has been married to her husband, John, for 39 years and enjoys taking walks on the beach with their dogs, Lilly and Daisy:)  Mrs. Benson worked at Williams Elementary teaching 6th grade Math and Science until October 2018 where she was then afforded the opportunity to be the Dean of Students at Viera High School.

I am so excited that I have been chosen to serve as your Assistant Principal and eager to join the Shooting Stars team! I have heard nothing but wonderful things about West Melbourne School of Science and I feel honored that I was selected to be a part of this school and community. I can’t wait to hit the ground running in August and meet each and every one of you!

I am a product of Brevard County Public Schools. I attended Saturn Elementary, Clearlake Middle School, and Cocoa High School. I even had the privilege to teach at the school I attended as a child and work under my elementary school principal. I have lived in Brevard County my entire life and have never had a desire to leave. I graduated from The University of Central Florida with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K- 6.  I went to Grand Canyon University and received a Master’s in Reading and Curriculum Instruction and my Specialist degree in Educational Leadership K-12. I also have my reading, ESOL, ESE, and leadership endorsements.

I started my teaching career in Orange County in 2010 and transferred to Brevard Public Schools two years later. During my teaching career, I taught 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade, as well as serving as an ESE resource teacher. I began my leadership career last year as a Teacher on Assignment, which allowed me to work alongside administration and learn the administrative role. I have also been privileged to be part of many district initiatives.

When I am outside of school, I have a busy life of being a mom. I have two children, a son and a daughter. My daughter stays busy with arts and crafts and my son stays busy with sports. I spend a lot of time cheering him on at football, baseball, and basketball games. When I am not being a sports mom, I enjoy spending my time camping and being by the pool.

Again, I am very excited to be part of this amazing school community and can’t wait to serve as your Assistant Principal and become a member of the Shooting Stars!
