Press Release

Brevard Public Schools (BPS) proudly hosted the official ribbon-cutting for the Aquadome at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School, today, marking the completion of a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as the centerpiece of the school’s expanding Aqua-Science program. This milestone highlights the district's commitment to hands-on learning and environmental science education.

The Aquadome is an engineering marvel, featuring a 3,000 PSI concrete foundation that is 8 inches thick with a 21-inch thickened edge. The structure, a galvanized steel greenhouse with polycarbonate panel coverings, has been specially engineered to withstand coastal conditions, including winds of up to 150 mph. Spanning 1,200 square feet, the facility is designed to provide students with a cutting-edge learning environment.

The construction, from groundbreaking to ribbon cutting, was completed in just 112 days.

The Aquadome houses 12 tanks, each holding approximately 450 gallons of water, for a total capacity of 5,400 gallons. The facility also boasts several state-of-the-art features, including top-of-the-line water piping and pumps, an automatic sunshade system controlled by a thermostat to regulate interior temperatures, and a diesel generator with a 500-gallon fuel tank capable of powering the Aquadome for up to four days in the event of a power outage.

"The Aquadome represents a significant advancement in our Aqua-Science program," said Rachel Rutledge, Director of Career and Technical Education. "Not only does this facility provide our students with the tools they need to excel in environmental and marine sciences, but it also supports our local community’s efforts to address environmental challenges like those affecting the Indian River Lagoon."

The Aqua-Science program, which began during the 2023-2024 school year, has quickly gained momentum, with 116 students currently enrolled. The program includes hands-on learning in the Aquadome and a Floating Classroom, where students collect water and soil samples from the Indian River Lagoon. Last year, 22 students earned an Agriculture Associate industry certification.

The Aquadome at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School stands out for its robust features and cutting-edge design. The facility is poised to prepare students for careers as aqua-culture managers, life support specialists, marine scientists, and environmental scientists. Available certifications include the Agro Associate Certificate, Agro System Certification, Life Systems Support Certification, and Aquaculture Technician Certification.

As Brevard Public Schools continues to expand its educational offerings, the Aquadome at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School is a shining example of innovation and student success, setting a new standard for environmental science education.
