Literacy Week Recap by Isabella Zervigon
At Melbourne High, reading is a beloved art for many to enjoy among students and teachers. Literacy week is a long tradition across the state of Florida to encourage more students to pick up a book and become immensely knowledgeable. Throughout the week, students dressed up to be part of the celebration. For example, Monday was a cozy pajama day, Tuesday for the student’s favorite sports team, Wednesday for wars between genres, rhyme without reason on Thursday and color wars for fun Friday.
Literacy Week isn’t just about reading because students love to look back on their favorite moments in high school and look forward to their plans for the future. On Friday, freshman Wyatt Channer dressed up in bright green for the last day of literacy week and looks forward to new memories to be made in the future, “I’m most excited about senior year because they get to go to Grad-Bash”, said Channer. As he looks forward to the years to come at Melbourne High, Channer also remembers his favorite memories with the crew team, “My favorite memories were mostly from crew because it’s a really fun sport based on teamwork”, Channer said.
Additionally, Mrs. Carrie Friday loves literacy week because it includes and encourages all students to be part of an amazing spirit week and make more high school memories, “It’s a really fun thing to do and it gets kids excited about reading”, said Mrs. Friday. Not only does spirit week for books inspire students to pick up a book, it’s also a fun week to put on a good party, “I also love to plan a good party," Mrs. Friday said.
Furthermore, Mrs. Friday loves literacy week and enjoys dressing up to support the exciting spirit week, “My favorite day is athletes v. book nerds day because it’s really easy and approachable for students to do”, Mrs. Friday said, “everybody has something that makes them look nerdy or something for a sports team”. Indeed, literacy week at Mel-High has something for everybody to enjoy even if you love books or more into sports.
