Spring Sport Spotlight: Girls Lacrosse by Cassidy Mammay
As spring sports started back up, preparing for the upcoming season, the girls' lacrosse team was one of those sports that began their preparations. With multiple sports in season, the turf field at Melbourne High School became busy. Instead of practicing on the field, the girls' lacrosse team took their practice to the beach. The team was practicing at the beach because the field was busy with other sports. Both boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' lacrosse, and girls' flag football are all using the field, so the team decided to have a fun practice on the beach.
Practicing at the beach may not be what everyone envisions, but the team liked it. Senior Alyssa Clark mentioned “I liked the view, I’ve always been a beach girl, and I loved being at my favorite place playing my favorite sport,” said Clark. Overall, the team had a positive response. Junior Kayla Lavoro added “I liked being by the water and watching the sunset while we practiced,” said Lavoro. Multiple other girls mentioned that the view and the water were nice to see while they practiced.
Despite the amount of fun they had, sand can be hard to deal with when moving around a lot. The grip in sand is not as good as the grip the girls are able to get with the turf. Junior Nadia Borowski mentioned “The sand was the biggest challenge to work around,” said Borowski. Lavaro commented “The hardest part was running in the sand, it was way harder than running on turf,” said Lavaro. While the girls had fun, the sand was a big challenge that they had to deal with.
